A new furnace or heat pump is easy to see; air leakage is not. Yet the attic, rim joist, crawl space, penetrations and poorly connected air barriers can make equipment work harder and leave rooms uncomfortable.

Start with diagnosis

Review bills, comfort complaints, insulation depth, attic bypasses, crawl-space conditions, bath and kitchen exhaust, duct location and signs of moisture. A professional assessment can use blower-door and infrared testing to target the scope.

Sequence matters

Resolve roof or plumbing leaks and confirm safe venting for combustion equipment before tightening the enclosure. Coordinate air sealing, insulation, ventilation and HVAC sizing rather than treating each as an isolated purchase.

Compare quotes by assembly

Ask for material type, R-value, installed depth, square footage, air-sealing locations, removal or cleanup, ventilation work, access, fire blocking, warranties and testing. A price per bag or inch does not describe the completed assembly.
