NON-NEGOTIABLE PORTABLE GENERATOR RULE

CPSC says to operate portable generators outside only, at least 20 feet from the home, with exhaust directed away. Never use one in a home, garage, basement, crawlspace, shed, porch or carport—even with doors open. Install working CO alarms on every level and outside sleeping areas.

“Whole home” is not unlimited power. Large loads may need sequencing or exclusion.

Home battery

No combustion exhaust at the battery and fast transfer; solar may provide a recharge path when designed for outage operation.

VERIFY
Usable kWh, continuous and surge kW, protected circuits, reserve setting, recharge time, warranty and installation rules.
DO NOT ASSUME
Power rating and energy capacity solve different problems. A large kWh figure does not guarantee motor starting.
